Criss Cross Patterns 1975

Arnold has been doing criss-cross pattern into his paintings since 1968. However, he was using this techinque even earlier in his drawings. Arnold was inspired and adapted the criss cross patterns style for his paintings in the 70s and 80s from the Abstract Expressionist school of 1950s. He was influenced through the Abstract Expressionists use of structuralists planes and formalist use of spaces in their works. Arnold's work is a combination of the sixites' freedom and discipline in the seventies.
